Short answer
Three costs add up. Floor space from the show: IMTS charges $29 to $37 per sq ft for 2026 orders, so $2,900 to $3,700 for a 10×10. The booth: $3,500 to $6,500 per show to rent a 10×10, $8,000 to $20,000 to build one, and $50,000 to $120,000 for a custom 20×20 island. Buyer's guide
Six decisions set what your booth looks like and what it costs. Settle them before you ask for quotes and every builder prices the same booth.
Your space contract gives the size. Its position on the floor plan makes it inline, corner, peninsula or island, which sets how many sides are open and how tall you can build.
See booth sizesCustom suits several shows a year at one size. Rental suits one show or a new size. Modular changes size between shows. Portable suits small booths you set up yourself.
Compare the four typesDesign, fabrication or rental, graphics, flooring, lighting and AV, shipping, install and dismantle, and storage, each on its own line, so quotes compare like for like.
See typical pricesThe exhibitor manual sets height limits, rigging, fire codes and which labor you must use. Builders who have worked your hall already know them.
Builders by convention centerCustom booths need design, approval and fabrication before the freight deadline. Rentals and modular systems turn around faster. Start from your show date and work back.
How far ahead to bookDemos, meetings, sampling or lead capture. Decide the job of the booth first: it sets the layout, the counters, the storage and the screens.

Questions
Three costs add up. Floor space from the show: IMTS charges $29 to $37 per sq ft for 2026 orders, so $2,900 to $3,700 for a 10×10. The booth: $3,500 to $6,500 per show to rent a 10×10, $8,000 to $20,000 to build one, and $50,000 to $120,000 for a custom 20×20 island. Show services: drayage $1,000 to $10,000+, install and dismantle $2,000 to $20,000, and electrical and internet $500 to $5,000. Steadfast Displays puts a realistic first-show 10×10 budget at $8,000 to $15,000.
The standard trade show booth is 10×10 feet: 100 square feet, inline, with one open side and a back wall usually limited to 8 feet high. Bigger inline booths grow in 10-foot steps (10×20, 10×30), and island booths start at 20×20.
A custom 20×20 island typically costs $50,000 to $120,000 to build, or $16,000 to $40,000 per show to rent. Tension fabric 20×20 kits start from $7,658.50.
By layout: inline (one open side), corner (two), peninsula (three) and island (all four). By how they are built: custom, rental, modular and portable. Your floor plan sets the layout; how often you exhibit sets the build.
A trade show booth, also called an exhibit booth or tradeshow booth, is everything you put in the floor space you rent from the show: the structure, graphics, lighting, AV, flooring and furniture. A builder designs and builds it, ships it to the venue, installs it before the show opens and takes it down afterwards.
Rent when you exhibit once or twice a year, or are trying a new size. Buy custom when you exhibit several times a year at the same size, because the booth is reused and only the graphics change. Many builders will quote both so you can compare.
Displays are the parts you can buy on their own: pop-up and fabric backwalls, banner stands, counters, kiosks and lightboxes. They suit 10 × 10 and 10 × 20 booths and can travel with you. Larger booths are usually built as custom, modular or rental exhibits.
A custom build needs design, your approval and fabrication before the show deadline for freight, so start as early as you can. Tell builders your show date in the brief and they will confirm what is realistic before you commit.
