Trade show ROI: how to measure it

Trade show ROI is what a show brings back for every dollar it costs. The four measures exhibitors use, the formula for each, a calculator, and what the latest research says about where the money goes.

Formula Hard dollar ROI = sales closed from show leads ÷ total show cost. $65,000 in sales on a $10,000 show is $6.50 back for every $1. ATS

  • Only 49% of exhibitors are very or extremely satisfied with lead acquisition, and 61% say unpredictable costs shape how they exhibit. Freeman 2024
  • 88% of exhibitors call cost and budgeting their top concern; average electrical rates rose 16.7%. Exhibitor Advocate, via TSNN
  • Attendees come to buy: 74% say in-person events are the best place to discover new products, 84% say talking to experts is crucial, and 96% are more confident after touching or testing a product. Freeman 2025

Questions

Common questions

How do you calculate trade show ROI?

Divide the sales closed from leads you met at the show by the total cost of the show. Before sales close, use potential ROI: leads × your close rate × your average deal, divided by the show cost (American Thoracic Society exhibitor kit).

What is a good cost per lead at a trade show?

Compare it with what a lead costs you elsewhere. The best known benchmarks are old: about $283 to meet a buyer in a booth (Exhibit Surveys, 2013) against $596 for a field sales call (CEIR, 2009). Your own channel costs are the better comparison.

What costs go into trade show ROI?

Everything the show costs: floor space, booth, staff travel, show services, graphics and shipping. Exhibit space is the largest share, 40.5% of exhibitor spend in 2024 (CEIR).

Do most exhibitors measure ROI?

Most measure something: 81% of exhibitors evaluate their attendee engagement, 63% in real time and 53% after the show (CEIR, 2024). Only 49% are very satisfied with their lead acquisition (Freeman, 2024).
